How to Check a School’s CBSE Affiliation Before Applying
posted on Oct 21, 2026
Learn how to check a school’s CBSE affiliation on SARAS, verify its number, address, level and validity, and cross-check its Mandatory Public Disclosure.

When parents shortlist schools, they usually look at the things that are easy to see: the campus, the facilities, the results and the reviews from other parents. Very few stop to ask a more basic question: is this school actually affiliated to CBSE, and up to which class?
It may sound like a formality. After all, the words “CBSE school” are printed on banners, brochures and school buses across Delhi. But affiliation decides whether your child can sit her Class 10 and Class 12 board exams from that school, and a gap here often surfaces at the worst possible time.
At Queen’s Valley School, a trusted CBSE girls school in Dwarka, Delhi, we encourage every parent to verify any school before applying, including ours. The good news is that it’s free and takes under five minutes.
So, in this blog post, we’re explaining where to check a school’s CBSE affiliation, which details should match, and what to look out for. If you’re still comparing schools, our guide on how to choose a CBSE school in Delhi covers the bigger picture first. Let’s begin.
Why Does CBSE Affiliation Matter So Much?
CBSE affiliation means the board has approved a school to follow its curriculum and present students for board exams at the relevant levels. It comes with conditions, such as qualified teachers, valid safety certificates and public disclosure of key information.
If a school isn’t affiliated up to the class your daughter will reach, she may have to change schools just before her boards, a stressful move that a simple check can prevent.
Where Can Parents Verify Affiliation?
The only source you really need is CBSE’s official affiliation portal, SARAS (School Affiliation Re-engineered Automation System). Here’s how to use it:
- Go to saras.cbse.gov.in and open the list of affiliated schools
- Search by the school’s affiliation number, which is the quickest and most accurate route
- If you don’t have the number, search by state, district or school name
- Open the school’s record to see its full details
Every CBSE school must also publish a Mandatory Public Disclosure on its website, usually including its affiliation letter, recognition certificate, safety certificates, staff details and fee structure. It’s a useful cross-check, but SARAS is the final word. If the two don’t match, go by SARAS.
Which Details Should Match?
Once you open a school’s SARAS record, compare it carefully with what the school has told you.

Does the Affiliation Cover the Right Class?
This is the question that catches most parents out. CBSE grants affiliation at three levels:
- Middle level: up to Class 8
- Secondary level: up to Class 10
- Senior secondary level: up to Class 12
A school affiliated only up to the secondary level cannot present students for the Class 12 board exam. So, if your daughter is starting Nursery today, look for a school affiliated up to Class 12. Otherwise, she may be forced to move at sixteen, just when she’s choosing her stream and preparing for her boards.
If a school says its affiliation is being “upgraded”, ask for proof of the application and a realistic timeline. “We’re applying soon” isn’t the same as “we’re affiliated.”
What About Delhi Government Recognition?
In Delhi, private schools also need recognition from the Directorate of Education (DoE). The two are separate. CBSE affiliation covers the curriculum and board exams, while DoE recognition covers the school’s right to operate, its admissions and its fees. A well-run school will gladly show you both.
Recognition matters at admission time too, as our guide to CBSE school admissions in Delhi explains.
What Red Flags Should Parents Watch For?
- The school can’t or won’t share its affiliation number
- The name or address on SARAS doesn’t match the address the school has given you
- Affiliation stops at Class 10, but the school advertises Classes 11 and 12
- The affiliation period has lapsed with no explanation
- The Mandatory Public Disclosure page is missing or badly outdated
- Vague phrases like “CBSE pattern” instead of a clear affiliation number
Each deserves a clear, documented answer before you pay any fees.
How Would This Look in Practice?
To make this easier, here’s how you could verify our own record. Search affiliation number 2730599 on SARAS, and you’ll find Queen’s Valley School at Site-B, Sector 8, Dwarka, in the South West Delhi district. The record shows our status as Senior Secondary Level, with an affiliation period from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2030. It also lists the Durga Parvati Khaitan Memorial Centre as our managing body, Dr Namita Sharma as our Principal, and July 2, 2007 as our date of first opening.
Because we’re affiliated up to Class 12, a girl who joins us in Nursery can stay with the same teachers, friends and campus right through to her board exams. We also take pride in sharing that we’ve recently been placed at City Rank 4 and National Rank 23 in the Girls’ Day School category of the Cfore Rankings Awards 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
-
Is the SARAS portal free to use?
Yes. Anyone can search CBSE’s list of affiliated schools without creating an account or logging in.
-
What if a school’s affiliation has expired?
Ask whether an extension application is in progress, and request a copy. Schools are expected to apply for an extension before their affiliation period ends.
-
Is DoE recognition the same as CBSE affiliation?
No. They’re two separate approvals, and a private school in Delhi needs both.
-
Should I check affiliation even for well-known schools?
Yes. It takes two minutes and confirms the affiliation level, which matters most in Classes 11 and 12.
Conclusion
Affiliation is one of the easiest parts of choosing a school to check, and one of the most important. A few minutes on SARAS can tell you whether a school can take your daughter all the way to her Class 12 boards, saving her an unsettling move later.
