Grade IX-XII students of Queen’s Valley School attended an internship programme - AIYA (Artificial Intelligence for Young Achievers) - organised by Corporate Gurukul at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) from 21st December, 2024 to 4th January, 2025. The programme gave students hands-on experience with AI and AWS services, combining classroom learning with practical applications, nurturing their technical skills, teamwork, and creativity. The programme combined academic rigour and practical applications, offering students a glimpse into life at one of Asia’s premier universities while allowing them to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Singapore.
Guided by NUS professor Dr. Tan, students learned about decision trees, regression models, neural networks, and large language models, helping them build a strong foundation in machine learning. Topics covered included core AI concepts, real-world applications, and hands-on exercises using tools like AI Studio and Google Colab. Students explored techniques such as Linear Regression, Decision Trees, Neural Networks, and Support Vector Machines. Sessions with teaching assistants provided valuable assistance, preparing students for group projects. Students received valuable feedback, enabling them to refine their ideas for the final project presentations.
Alongside the internship, students explored Singapore’s culture and distinguished landmarks. The university’s state-of-the-art facilities, innovative learning spaces, and lush greenery left the students inspired. Students were escorted on a guided city tour that took them to iconic cultural and tourist spots, including Chinatown, Little India, Esplanade, and Merlion Park. Students captured memorable photos while soaking in the city’s vibrant culture. Students celebrated Christmas at Universal Studios Singapore.
Certified Amazon trainer Mr. Amol Puri led AWS sessions on Big Data Analytics, the 5 Vs of Big Data, IAM (Identity and Access Management), AWS services, cost management, billing, and S3 bucket applications, enhancing their cloud computing and data skills. Students delved deeper into Machine Learning, exploring advanced topics such as Large Language Models (LLMs), Transformers, and the application of structured and unstructured data in AI. The sessions focused on improving model accuracy and efficiency, with quizzes reinforcing learning. Students also learned about cloud services and pretrained models, gaining insights into modern AI infrastructure.
Students also began working on their AWS projects, crafting problem statements and designing solutions using a combination of low-code, no-code or pro-code approaches. The final days of the program were dedicated to project refinement and presentations. Each project reflected creativity, technical expertise, and teamwork. The programme concluded with a joyful New Year’s celebration, marking the end of an enriching and transformative experience. The programme not only strengthened students’ understanding of AI but also introduced them to university life, leaving them with valuable skills, lifelong memories, and a deeper passion for technology and innovation. The students returned with enhanced knowledge, global perspectives, and memories to cherish forever.
